New President Sport Committee - Maj Alessandro Trono (Italy)

A new President of the CISM Sport Committee - Military Pentathlon has been elected by the CISM Board of Directors during their last meeting in Sweden/Finland in the first week of March.

Maj Alessandro Trono follows MajGen Johann Pucher (AUT), who resigned as President SC after
15 years. The election of the 41 year old Italian, who has been member of the CISM Sport Committee already since 2002, is a clear sign of continuity but also a signal for rejuvenation.

Before becoming a member of the SC, Maj Trono himself was a pentathlete and competed at
14 World Championships between 1986 and 2000.

Especially in a sport like Military Pentathlon - with no backing up from a civilian international
federation - the President of the SC is the ultimate authority. He is fully responsible for the management, development and technical aspects of a category one sport in CISM.

In a first statement Maj Trono underlined, that he will aim to maintain the top position of Military Pentathlon, as the flagship of military sports, as he primary objective.

News from Norway - Retirement of Gunhild Berntsen

Gunhild Berntsen, the leading European athlete for nearly a decade, has retired from competition sport by the end of 2007.
Gunhild won 5 times the European Cup in a raw (2002 – 2006) and additionally she finished twice as runner up and twice in third place within the last 9 years. She is a two-times European Champion in the individual classification as well as a multiple medal winner with the team at World Championships.
However there is one big goal she could unfortunately not reach throughout her whole career, an individual medal at World Championships. Two times she finished in 4. place and additionally three times in 5. place. In 2007 just 4.4 pts were missing to the long desired individual medal.
Gunhild retires with a PB of 5380.6pts, the second highest from a European athlete ever.
The Military Pentathlon family wishes her all the best for her future life, and we hope to see her again as official or spectator at our competitions.

News from Switzerland

As it looks now 2008 will be the last competition season for Switzerland. It is planned that Switzerland terminates its participation in Military Pentathlon at the end of this year. Only 2 athletes are left and the have to quit their career for financial reasons.
SUI is one of the most traditional countries in Military Pentathlon, and started already in 1952. Since then they participated at total of 45 times at World Championships so far, which makes them number 6 in terms of participation at World Championships (since 1962 they have not missed a single championship).
Switzerland was not only a frequent participant but also a very valuable competition organiser, making them a real stronghold of our sport. Bremgarten is one of the most traditional competition venues worldwide, hosting nearly each year an international tournament since the mid 60s. Also 2 World Championships (1981, 1992) were organised by Switzerland at their superb competition facilities in Bremgarten.
Apart from that Switzerland will always be remembered because of the outstanding results achieved by their athletes. Two individual titles were achieved by the legendary Ernst Engeli, the second best athlete ever in the history of Military Pentathlon (Pers Best 5652,9 pts). In the team classification Switzerland was also able to gain one title. Other famous names that will always be linked with Military Pentathlon are among others: Thomann and Tall in the 70s, Waser, Schenk and Taubert later in the 80s and early 90s.
In 1994 a last “golden era” ended when nearly the whole team had retired at the same time. For years Switzerland was only represented by individual starters like Jörg Wetzel or Adrian Stutz. Between 2000 and 2006 Switzerland was able to form a new team again; however they could not meet the successes reached by their predecessors. Financial restrictions did not allow for a long term planning and building up a strong new team. Between 1993 and 2001 Switzerland was also active in the female Military Pentathlon and has successfully been represented by Lottti Leuzinger, a two-times-winner of the European Cup.
Last but not least Switzerland was also represented in the Military Pentathlon Sport Committee:
Theo Hügi was member of the Technical Committee between 1975 and 1993,
while Felix Muff retired only last year from his post in the Sport Committee (1996 till 2007).

Competition Calendar 2008

- The Belgian delegation confirmed the competition in Leopoldsburg and is willing to invite up to 6

countries. With a total of 7 countries the SC is considering the possibility to assign the status of
a European Cup Tournament for male athletes.
- Already now it becomes clear, that the summer competitions (Holstebro, Riga, Wiener Neustadt)
will be massively overbooked; surely not all countries interested in participating can receive an
invitation. However there is still free capacity in the spring competitions (Revingehed, Leopoldsburg,
Lecce). Teams and delegations are requested to reconsider their participation intentions.

January 20, 2008

Composition of the Teams

In order to allow for an even better coordination process, teams are requested to inform us of their expected composition of the teams by answering the following 2 questions.

- Will you have female athletes competing on international level in 2008? Yes/No
- How many male athletes/female athletes you are planning to send to international competitions?
Please send this information as soon as possible to Marcus Pucher.
For the coordination process it is crucial to know about the approximate number of athletes and not only about the number of interested countries.

Ranking List - for the start of the 2008 season

Within the last years the ranking list has been transformed into an entry list, in order to meet in a better way the demands of the competition organisers. It consits of all the important data for the establishment of the starting lists at competitions, like the MILPIN, the correct spelling of names as well as the entry times for obstacle run and obstacle swimming. Since there cannot any ranking be found in this list, it would be reasonable to change its name also officially into "Entry List".
This, my final, edition of the list will guarantee that for the first competitions of the 2008 season everything is set to go for the organisers. Then it will be up to the new SC to take decisions as
regards the future of this list.

January 6, 2008

Qualification List - for the 2008 World Championship

According to the regulations participation at World Championships is possible only for A-countries and additionally for those athletes, who have individually reached the qualification limit.
In order to promote Military Pentathlon for females the qualification regulations are currently suspended and therefore no qualification list is available for female athletes.

MajGen Johann Pucher (Sport Committee President 1993 - 2008)

After 15 years as president of the Technical/Sport Committee, MajGen Johann Pucher will hand over the presidency of Military Pentathlon to a younger generation in order to give a new impetus to the development of Military Pentathlon. MajGen Pucher has become member of the Sport Committee in 1990 and president in 1993 after having acted as president ad interim already in 1992. He may stay as member of the Board of Directors in CISM for another 4 years.
Military Pentathlon has become one of the pillars of military sports and has been one of the most successful sports in CISM, reaching the landmark of 50 World Championships as the first CISM sport already in 2002. Taking into account that World Championships in the beginning of the 90s had around 15 participating countries and less than 100 participants (incl. women) it has been an unparalleled success to double the number of participating nations in Military Pentathlon since then. Presently more than 30 countries with about 200 athletes are participating regularly at world level. Already in 2002 a qualification system had to be introduced in order to steer participation and to ensure an appropriate level of performance at World Championships.
Milestones in the development of Military Pentathlon during the "Pucher Years" have been:

  • Introduction of the Obstacle Relay (1993, part of the World Championships since 1995)
  • Introduction of the European Cup (1994)
  • Handicap Starting Method in Cross Country (1994, at World Championships since 1996)
  • Strict competition dress regulations to ensure media and spectator attraction (1994)
  • Ranking lists as base for establishing the starting list in swimming and obstacle run (1995)
  • Standardisation of throwing projectiles (1995)
  • Demonstration sport at the civilian World Games in Lahti (1997)
  • Introduction of the MilPIN system as a tool for international athletes identification (1999)
  • First sport webpage in the context of CISM (2000)
  • Further standardisation of the obstacle track (2000)
  • Qualification system for World Championships (2003)
  • World Rankings (2006)
  • Female participation reached 50 athletes at the World Games 2007
  • Expansion of the technical assistance for newcomer countries (e.g. CRO, IND, RSA, UAE, SYR)
  • Establishment of a fair and balanced competition calendar with about 6- 10 medium/big sized international competitions
